Description	The Italian H2 Backbone is a planned hydrogen pipeline running from an entry point in Sicily to interconnections with Austria and Switzerland. It will stretch across 1,920 km and be capable of importing 4.4 million tonnes of hydrogen per year into Sicily and transmitting 1.7 million tonnes per year into or out of Austria. The pipeline will largely be made up of repurposed gas pipelines, expected to constitute 65% of the network. Snam has received a €24 million grant for engineering studies and plans to spend €24 million from its own funds for development work. The project is also set to be linked to Snam’s wider “SoutH2” corridor, which will import renewable hydrogen produced in North Africa to meet industrial demand in Central Europe.
