In July 2010, the Brazilian company Multiterminais Alfandegados do Brasil Ltda was awarded in a competitive bidding process the contract to manage and operate the Aeroporto Regional Zona da Mata located at the cities of Goiana e Rio Novo (state of Minas Gerais). Only Multiterminais bid for the project, and information on the bidding criteria set by the regulatory agency was also not available. The airport was constructed by the state government predominantly as a cargo facility. Although the construction works commenced in 2001, the airport commenced operations only in August 2011. Multiterminais signed a one year contract renewable for additional four years to manage the facility and was set to receive US$ million (BRL 6.3 million) per year in management fees. The contract was renewed, and, as of December 2013, the state-government was considering implementing a new bidding process once the contract signed with Multiterminais ends. In November 2014, another bidding process took place and concession contract was awarded to Consorcio Aeroporto Zona da Mata (ID 8158). The new sponsors took over the operations in December 2014.
