The project aims to better protect selected Tunisian coastal sites against the effects of climate change, particularly coastal erosion. By rehabilitating particularly eroded coastal areas in the Gulf of Hammamet and the Gulf of Gabès, coastlines will be stabilized and protected against renewed erosion. The fourth phase focuses on the southern point of the port of Sousse to the town of Skanes in the north of Monastir and the coastal section northeast of Djerba in the Gulf of Gabès. Measures such as sea walls, riprap, breakwaters and groynes will be used to permanently stabilize the coast and protect tourism, especially in the Djerba region. The project is part of the integrated water resources management (IWRM) in Tunisia and helps to protect valuable coastal ecosystems, aquifers and settlements. This also includes economic sectors such as tourism, fishing, agriculture and handicrafts. The project supports adaptation to climate change, strengthens the resilience of the local population and increases the resilience of the Tunisian coastal region to climate-related hazards. The coastal protection measures are being implemented in coordination with the Tunisian coastal protection authority APAL and the Ministry of the Environment, as a contribution to the national climate adaptation strategy and the protection of threatened ecological and economic areas.
