Description

The U.S. Department of Energy has issued a third 90-day emergency order to keep the Consumers Energy J. H. Campbell Plant in Port Sheldon Township operating past its planned retirement date. The plant was originally planned to close on May 31, 2025, under a Clean Energy Plan to eliminate coal as an energy source. The emergency orders have extended the plant's operation to ensure electricity reliability, with the latest order running until midnight February 17, 2026. The plant began operations in 1962, generating nearly 1,500 megawatts of electricity on a 2,000-acre property. Retirement and restoration work was expected to begin in 2025 and last until 2030, including coal residual removal and ash remediation.
