Jaguar Energy Guatemala, a 100% subsidiary of Ashmore Energy International [USA], began construction of a 300MW coal fired power plant near Puerto Quetzal in 2008. Delayed due to lack of financing during the financial crisis, the plant eventually obtained financing in March 2010, due to a syndication led by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE) and Banca de Inversion Bancolombia SA in the form of a US $350 million 10 year term loan for construction priced at LIBOR +575 basis points. Ashmore Energy provided US$408 million in equity. New China Energy Machine Corporation was the EPC contractor Jaguar Energy had 15 year Power Puchase Agreements for 200 MW of its power to Gas Natural's local Guatemalan electricity distribution companies in 2008. The remainder expected to be sold in the local Guatemalan and regional wholesale power markets. The plant was expected to become operational in 2013.
