Description

Description

Mirant (formerly known as Southern Energy) acquired 80% of Jamaica Public Service Co.'s (JPS) shares in Mar. 2001 for US$ 201 million. The government maintained a 20% stake and was to name three of the nine memebers of the board of directors. JPS has a total installed capacity of 660 MW, including five steam-fired plants, eight hydro plants, eight gas-fired plants and two diesel fueled plants. Southern Energy, renamed Mirant Corporation in 2000, intended to add an additional 385 MW to the system: a 25 MW oil-fired station expected to come on line in the summer of 2001, and two other 40-MW plants that were expected to start commercial operation in mid 2002. JPS has approximately 550,000 customers. In August 2007, Marubeni Corp. acquired Mirant Caribbean Holdings Ltd. from Mirant Corporation. With this acquisition, made through a competitive auction process, Marubeni Corp. acquired Mirant's 80% share in JPS.
