Jangbogo N nuclear-powered submarine project

South Korea is seeking to build its first nuclear-powered submarine by the mid-2030s, with construction to be done domestically. The project aims to develop and acquire a nuclear-powered submarine capability using low-enriched uranium fuel and complying with international nonproliferation obligations. The submarine will offer enhanced operational capabilities compared to conventional diesel-powered submarines, including longer underwater endurance and greater mobility. The project is a national strategic initiative involving Korea's nuclear and shipbuilding sectors, managing the vessel's entire life cycle from design to decommissioning.
