Japan's First Commercial-Scale Floating Wind Farm

The project involves the installation of eight floating wind turbines located five kilometers off the coast of the Goto Islands in southwestern Japan. These turbines are designed to operate in deep waters up to 140 meters and are part of Japan's strategy to increase renewable energy contribution to 4-8% by 2040. The floating design is chosen due to Japan's deep coastal waters and susceptibility to natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons. The turbines are expected to start operation in January 2026, with fishermen receiving part of the revenue and some property taxes from the project.
