Description

Japan is subsidizing NEC's purchase of ocean-going cable-laying ships to reduce reliance on foreign vessels and enhance the security and autonomy of its undersea cable infrastructure. NEC, Asia's largest undersea cable installer, currently leases ships but will acquire its own fleet, with the first transoceanic cable ship expected by 2027 pending approvals. The government plans to invest around $500 million to co-finance two vessels, ensuring NEC has unfettered access to cable-laying capabilities for laying new routes and repairing cables.
