Description

Description

The Jean Monnet Chair in Civil Society, Inclusion, and Diversity in the EU (CIDEU) will promote research and teaching on European integration with a focus on civil society’s role in advancing civic and political inclusion of women and marginalized communities, and combating challenges to social cohesion and inclusive participation. Gender equality and diversity have become core norms in the EU. Next to political institutions, European civil society has a key role in promoting strategies to advance women, mainstream gender, and include diverse constituencies across policy areas. Civil society is also the main arena for contestations of these norms and strategies, for example, by rightwing populist movements and parties. CIDEU will generate, organize, and disseminate knowledge on the interaction of EU-level and member state institutions and civil society networks in advancing gender and diversity initiatives. It will provide research and data on mobilizations for parity democracy and ask how the Conference on the Future of Europe promotes inclusion and diversity. It will strengthen EU Studies at the University of Washington, in Pacific Northwest academic communities, in high school education, and reach out to wider audiences, including non-profits and the general public. CIDEU will contribute to transatlantic debates on how to address challenges to democracy and strengthen knowledge about institutions, values, and functions of the EU and its specific policies on gender equality, diversity, and social inclusion. CIDEU teaching activities will reach about 200 students annually. A summer Policy Forum for Educators will include 30 high school and community college teachers. A West Coast Model EU CIDEU module is expected to reach 150 students over three years. Outreach during the annual Scholar/Practitioner in Residence will target several hundred individuals and organizations. CIDEU modules and podcasts are expected to reach more than 100 downloads/listeners each.
