Description

Description

The JMC-EPP is a multidisciplinary program dedicated to teaching, research, and knowledge dissemination on European integration and the EU port/shipping and related initiatives. The program (b) integrates teaching on EPP and interlinked matters (internal market, transportation, shipping, sustainability, European integration, institutions, and decision-making) in the Department of Maritime Studies, University of Piraeus, Greece curriculum (i) two courses within the BSc in Maritime Studies (132 teaching hours/year; 200 students/year since 1998; one in Greek and one in English as also attended by visiting Erasmus students); (ii) a postgraduate course within the MSc in Shipping Management (new course in English; 33 teaching hours/year; 60 students/year since 2006). Lectures are complemented by (c) tutorials and student assignments on European integration and EPP and (c) a related e-hub, based on a dedicated EPP microsite and social media accounts, available to all (students and public). The 495 teaching hours will directly benefit a minimum of 980 students. Additional activities include (d) annual public events on shipping/ports and the Blue economy at a major port-city and maritime capital (Piraeus); (e) A major public event involving students, scholars, stakeholders, and local/regional and European level policy-makers, timing aligned with ongoing discussions for new EPP strategies); (f) High-school visits to familiarise students with the fundamentals, values, and work of EU; (f) Dissemination through peer-reviewed publications, press articles, and conference presentations. With the European ports and shipping being a vital component for trade, social cohesion, sustainable economic development, and, thus, the geopolitical position of the EU, the only JMC at a European University devoted to European initiatives related to ports and shipping will be implemented by a scholar who already successfully implemented three JM Module grants on EPP (2003; 2008; 2013).
