Stiff competition for Jeju Myths and History Theme Park project Tourism infrastructure is changing in Jeju Island. The epicenter of the change is the Jeju Myths and History Theme Park. The Jeju Myths and History Theme Park project involves the construction of an integrated resort containing theme parks that feature local myths and legends, a premium hotel, shopping facilities and a casino. The long-awaited park will be located on a 3.98 million ㎡ site, which is larger than that of the Jungmun Tourism Complex. The client of the project is Landing Jeju Development Corporation, a Jeju Island-based joint venture co-financed by Hong Kong’s Landing Holding Group and Singapore’s Genting Singpoare PLC.Hyundai E&C competed to win the project in less favorable conditions because we had less experience in conducting construction projects in the island compared to our competitors and no experience to work with the client. Despite the fierce bidding competition, however, Hyundai E&C ended up being awarded a series of projects one by one to build resort condominiums, the first stage of theme parks and dormitories within Plot-R, A and H. The achievement is attributed to the high awareness of Hyundai E&C and our elaborate construction planning.Indomitable will to overcome barriers The Jeju Myths and History Theme Park Plot-R is the first project that Hyundai E&C obtained in the development of Resorts Word Jeju. In the Plot-R, 42 buildings of condominiums, 47 buildings of villas and 4 convenience facilities and 3 affiliated facilities are built in an area of about 230,000 ㎡ and the total floor area of 134,000 ㎡.An official from the construction site said that the Plot-R is more like “a construction site conducted abroad.” Unlike other domestic construction sites, it has the foreign client, deals with approval procedures as strict as those applied to overseas projects and holds meetings in three different languages. Moreover, due to geographical characteristics of the island, the construction site has to fight against unpredictable changes in weather including strong wind, heavy rain and snow and receive all construction materials by sea, making the situation at the construction site worse. However, Hyundai E&C came up to the client’s expectations by rushing the construction work even in the early stage of the construction to meet the schedule. As the Plot-R project has a huge effect on the projects that will follow on, our company put more emphasis on safety management. As a result, we had no accidents for a period of time three times longer than the annual average working hours designated by the Ministry of Employment and Labor.
