Description | The J.H. Campbell coal-fired power plant in Port Sheldon, Michigan, originally scheduled for partial closure in 2030 and full closure in 2040, was moved up to close by May 31, 2025. However, an emergency order by the U.S. Department of Energy on May 23, 2025, demands the plant remain operational for 90 days beyond the planned closure to prevent potential power outages and grid instability during high electricity demand in summer. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel challenged this order citing high costs and environmental concerns. The plant has a capacity of 1,450 megawatts and is Consumers Energy's last coal-fired plant in the state. |
