J.H. Campbell Coal Plant Deep Injection Wells

Consumers Energy plans to drill two deep injection wells at the J.H. Campbell coal plant in Ottawa County, Michigan, to dispose of coal ash wastewater and other liquids generated during site cleanup. The wells will be used to inject wastewater thousands of feet underground, including leachate, contaminated groundwater, and wastewater from dewatering activities related to the closure of the plant's unlined coal ash impoundment. The project aims to replace the current practice of discharging wastewater into Lake Michigan once the generating units stop running.
