Description

Description

In May 2002, Earth Tech, a subsidiary of Tyco International Limited of the U.S., was awarded a 20-year concession contract for the expansion and operation of the Jie Yuan Water Treatment Plant by the state-owned Tianjin Water Works Group Company. The project involved the operation and management of an existing plant with the capacity to treat more than 400,000 cubic meters of water per day in Tianjin, with a population of more than 10 million. To implement the contract, the Tianjin Earth Tech Jieyuan Water Co. Ltd. was created as the project company, a 52-48 joint venture (JV) formed by Earth Tech and the state-owned Tianjin Water Works Company. In March 2009, the share of Earth Tech was acquired by Suez. The initial US$20 million construction contract was to expand the plant’s capacity to 500,000 cubic meters per day and add sand filters, dosing systems and controls in an effort to separate and remove solids from the city’s polluted water sources. The JV assumed control of the utility in September of 2002. The entire contract was valued at more than US$400 million in revenues to Earth Tech. Sponsor change from Earth Tech to Suez in March 2009.
