Description
Description | The Joint Action Against SLAPPs (JAAS) project addresses the common use of Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) in Croatia, where such lawsuits are frequently used to silence journalists, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders. Recognizing SLAPPs as a serious threat to freedom of expression and democratic participation, this project seeks to strengthen national resilience through a comprehensive approach combining monitoring, legal aid, capacity building and advocacy. The project’s focus on monitoring, legal support, awareness raising, and advocacy aligns with the call’s aim to promote civic engagement by enabling citizens and associations to participate in democratic and civic life actively. It will create a structured national mechanism for tracking SLAPP cases, providing data for evidence based advocacy and public awareness. At the same time, it will enhance the legal and professionals’ capacities of journalists, CSOs, lawyers, and judges by developing specialized training programs, practical tools, and legal resources tailored to SLAPP challenges. Special focus is given to training judges to make sure court practices follow European standards and protect freedom of expression. By encouraging the exchange of best practices across EU countries and tracking how the EU Anti-SLAPP Directive is applied, the project boosts cross-border cooperation and strengthens Europe’s overall response to legal harassment. Gender equality and non-discrimination are built into the project’s approach, recognizing that women journalists and activists face greater risks and ensuring that all activities directly address these challenges. In the long run, JAAS aims to create a safer and more supportive environment for public participation, protect independent journalism, empower civil society and reinforce democracy in Croatia and across the EU. |
