Description
Description | The aim of the IWRM programme is to create the conditions for sustainable, interregional and integrated management of water resources in the programme region by providing infrastructure for storage, more efficient use and fairer distribution of scarce (surface) water resources as well as measures to reduce water losses. In the medium term, this should lead to improved water availability, especially in disadvantaged rural areas, and make a contribution to socio-economic development there. At the same time, increased surface water use relieves the pressure on groundwater resources (resource protection). The programme components already tested will add value to at least 127 million m³ of storage volume (rehabilitated) and/or create new ones, and at least 260 km of water transfer and distribution networks will be added to value and/or created new ones. In addition, the necessary infrastructure will be built to treat up to 9.5 million m³ of surface water per year to drinking water quality. These measures will improve (directly and indirectly) the living conditions of up to 4.5 million people (almost 50% of the Tunisian population). |
