The Jamshedpur Power Company, a joint venture between Mission Energy and the Tata Power Companies (TPC), developed an estimated 240-MW (120-MW x 2) coal-fired power plant at Jojobera, Bihar State. TPC is comprised of 3 private utilities--Tata Power Company, Tata Hydro Power Supply Company, and Andhra Valley Power Supply Company. The estimated project cost was Rs 981 crores, approximately $282.3 million. Roughly $48.9 million had been sourced by Indian Financial Institutions by 1995. Located in Jamshedpur, the automated Jojobera Power Plant distributes the bulk of its 300-megawatt power to nearby industrial customers such as Tata Steel, and occasionally sells excess electricity to other power distributors. To maximize the benefits of the 2003 expansion, Tata Power installed a network of 45 ION intelligent energy meters at all key generation and distribution points. The first 120 mw unit of the Jojobera Thermal Station started commercial operation in February 2001 and the construction of the second 120 mw unit was commissioned in December 2001. Construction work at TPC's third 120 MW Jojobera expansion plant began in 2003 with an additional investment of approximately 370-cr (US$79m) to be funded internally and through debt. The power from this additional plant was expected to be commissioned by October 2005.
