Description
Description | Following the devastating fire which broke out at the airport on 7 August 2013, destroying the arrivals building and damaging a number of other facilities, urgent discussions have taken place between KAA, EIB, the EU Delegation in Kenya and the consultant firm EGIS to assess what needs to be done to resume safe and efficient operations and adapt the project and remaining infrastructure to suit the post fire situation. Urgent measures are funded by EU-AITF (as approved by the EU-AITF Executive Committee in December 2013): assessment of the requirements for temporary (or interim) terminal facilities; review of the fire and life safety provisions in the new car park building (to be used on a temporary basis for arrivals) and elsewhere at the airport; review of the overall airport traffic forecasts and peak hour traffic flows to match facility provision with demand; re-design of the pre-concept of Package 3B (rehabilitation of Units 1, 2 and 3) to reflect the best way forward given post fire changes; environmental assessment for the interim facilities and Operational Readiness and Transfer (ORAT) advice for the temporary facilities. As of December 2015, all works financed by the AFD loan (2-JKIA Terminal 4, parking garage & Parking on grade) are completed and the loan is closed. In addition, the package financed by the World Bank loan (arrivals in terminal 4) are now completed and were commissioned before the end of first half 2016. The EU-AITF TA Grant was used by EIB to fund a service contract for technical and management support to the project. The contract was awarded to the consortium EGIS AVIA / EGIS BCEOM International in September 2010 and ended in September 2015. |
