Description | Jordan Public Pay Phone Services Co. (JPP) was awarded one of the two licenses to provide payphone services granted in Jordan in October 1997. The other license was awarded to Trans Jordan Communications Services. JPP was a joint venture between Alpha International and Turkish Romelli Investment Group (50%). The companies won their licenses when they offered the lowest end-user-prices. The company had around 200 smart card payphones by end 1997. In August of 2001, the state-monopoly Jordan Telecom completely disconnected 20% of JPP's lines and blocked international calls from 80% of JPP's 3,000 booths across Jordan. The decision was the last episode in a two-and-a-half-year row in which Jordan Telecom charged that JPP was defaulting on the payment of some JOD 2 million worth of bills, while the pay phone company said the bills were either inaccurate or wrong. In June 2001 JPP filed a 5.0 million dinar ($7.1 million) lawsuit against Jordan Telecom. None None |
