Description

Description

Hyundai E&C constructs new waterway in southern part of KoreaThe project is aimed at building a new waterway tunnel to resolve the structural instability of the existing waterway tunnel and to stabilize the water supply for the surrounding region. The waterway tunnel in the Juam Dam is considered an important source of supplying water not only to about 700,000 residents living in the eastern region of the Jeollanam-do for living and irrigation but also to the Yeosu National Industrial Complex for industrial use.The Juam Dam waterway conduction tunnel stabilization project includes the construction of an 11.2-kilometer waterway tunnel, an intake tower, a vertical shaft and a temporary coffering. As of March 29, 65 percent of the construction was completed, and the project is slated to be finished in July 2020.The key of the project was to excavate the 11.2-kilometer-long waterway tunnel. Korea’s primary builder chose the tunnel boring machine(TBM) method to ensure stable excavation even in weak ground and minimize safety-related accidents as the new tunnel was constructed only a few meters away from the existing one.The construction site allowed two tunnel boring machines to work from both sides of inlet and outlet sections. However, the tunnel construction was considerably slower than anticipated in the early stage of the project. To speed up the excavation work, the construction site analyzed the ground conditions in collaboration with the headquarters’ R&D Center and came up with a criteria for improvement best suited for the TBM construction. As a result, the TBMs could achieve a drilling rate of 340 meters per month, leading to cutting down on construction schedule and costs.Safety control was carefully managed at the construction site where major construction works were conducted inside the tunnel. They developed a realtime monitoring system and introduced a fingerprint verifications system for entrance to the construction site in order to manage safety in a more effective way.Hyundai E&C successfully completed the penetration of the new waterway tunnel in the Juam Dam through the TBM method. This “new waterway” is expected to supply 540,000 tons of water per day on average to the every corner of the eastern region of the southern part of the country.
