Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam

The Julius Nyerere hydroelectric dam addresses Africa's growing demand for electricity and sustainable development. It includes a 134-meter-high by 1,025-meter-long dam with a reservoir capacity of 34 billion cubic meters. The dam houses nine 235-MW Francis turbines generating up to 6,035 GWh annually. Located in a remote, flood-prone area of Tanzania, the project involved extensive geotechnical analysis and construction of over 24 roads and bridges for access. The project employed roller compacted concrete and constructed diversion tunnels and cofferdams to manage river flow during construction. It provided jobs for over 12,000 workers and training for 5,000 Tanzanians, contributing to Tanzania's GDP and power supply to neighboring countries.
