Opportunity The Juravinski General Hospital— formerly the Henderson General Hospital— is a full-service community hospital providing acute inpatient and palliative care and diagnostic services. The hospital’s 24-hour Emergency Department manages more than 30,000 visits annually. The aging hospital required additional space in order to meet current and future demand as well as provide a full range of modern clinical and diagnostic services and supports.\ Innovations EllisDon Corporation was required to finance construction of the project until the facility was turned over to Hamilton Health Sciences. Payment was given in two stages, the first upon substantial completion of Phase 1A in late spring 2010 and the second upon substantial completion of the entire project in 2012. Results The hospital now has an additional 400,000 square feet of space and 35,000 square feet of renovated space, expanding both in- and out-patient services, resulting in shortened wait times. The project was completed on-time and on-budget. Bed capacity increased from 235 to 338 including an increase from 50 to 90 beds in oncology. There are now more single patient rooms which are more comfortable for patients and safer from an infection control perspective. Other features of the expansion include: A state-of-the-art Emergency Department built to maximize efficiency and patient flow with infection control principles at the forefront of its design; A surgical suite including nine large, new operating rooms equipped with the latest technology; A consolidated Diagnostic Imaging Department featuring leading-edge technology including a new 3T MRI; An enhanced Oncology Inpatient Unit designed to meet the needs of patients and their family; A custom-designed Intensive Care Unit with more privacy and comfort for critically ill patients and their visitors; An increase in outpatient support services; and A fully-equipped auditorium and meeting space to enable professional collaboration and development. The public sector retains ownership, control and accountability for the hospital, including the delivery of clinical services.
