Description
Description | The project involves the construction of 120 MW Kairouan solar farm located in Metbassta, Kairouan governorate, Tunisia. It is being built under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model and will generate 222 GWh of clean energy per year. The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 108,848 tCO2eq/year. The energy is sufficient to power 49,443 household units, or an equivalent volume of industrial or commercial consumption in the country. It is anticipated to generate 350 temporary jobs during construction, including 15 positions for females and 100 skilled jobs. Additionally, there will be 25 full-time jobs during operations, comprising 6 positions for females and 10 skilled jobs. The project will be implemented by Kairouan Solar Plant, a project company fully owned by AMEA Power. Sponsors of the project are AMEA Power and TBEA Xinjiang New Energy. A 20-year Power Purchase Agreement has been signed with Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz. AfDB and the IFC are co-Lead Arrangers on the financing. The total project cost amounts to $86m. The AfDB provided a senior loan split into three tranches, consisting of a $10.6m loan and another $10m loan, both from AfDB's ordinary resources. The third tranche, worth $17m, is from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) at concessional terms provided under the Covid-19 IPP Relief Program. IFC’s investment includes a $20 m Loan from its own account and up to $17m from IFC as implementing entity of the Clean Technology Fund.
