Description

In 2003 the Kakira Sugar Works undertook plans to expand its cogeneration plant in order to provide power to the local Jinja area and to sell power to the national grid. The project involved expanding the 4.5 MW generation capacity to 20 MW, of which 12 MW would be sold to the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited. The plant was fueled by bagasse (a sugar by-product). The Kakira Sugar Works were a subsidiary of the Madhvani Group (Uganda). The project was expected to cost US$43 million (including some expenditure on agricultural development and factory expansion). Financing was being provided from the East African Development Bank ($8.6 million), the Netherlands Development Finance Institution (US$11.7 million) and the Global Environment Fund (US$3.3 million). The Ugandan Government provided a US$3.54 million subsidy in to encourage development of the project. Construction was expected to be completed by late 2006. By 2009, the 20MW plant was delivering 12MW to the national grid. RE info needs update.
