Description | The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) is an India-funded project aimed at connecting the northeast region of India with the rest of the country through Sittwe port on the Kaladan River in Myanmar. The project includes the construction of a vital road component connecting Paletwa in Myanmar to Zorinpui in Mizoram, India, and aims to provide an alternate route bypassing Bangladesh, decongesting the narrow Siliguri Corridor (Chicken Neck). The project faces delays due to political turmoil and civil war in Myanmar, and the control of key areas by the ethnic Arakan Army rebels. The Union Cabinet has also approved a high-speed four-lane Shillong-Silchar greenfield highway to integrate with KMTTP for faster movement of goods. |
