Description | The Kalpasar Project is a proposed massive dam across the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat, India, aiming to create the world's largest freshwater reservoir in a marine environment. It plans to store nearly 10 billion cubic metres of freshwater from rivers like Narmada, Mahi, Sabarmati, and Dhadar for irrigation, drinking water, industrial use, flood control, and salinity prevention. The project also includes a 10-lane transport corridor over the dam to reduce travel distance between Saurashtra and South Gujarat by over 200 kilometres. Initially conceived partly as a tidal power project, it now focuses on freshwater storage and integrated water management. |
