Description

The Kamala Hydro Electric Project is a hydropower project approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on April 9, 2026. It aims to harness the waters of the Kamala river to produce 1720 MW of electricity, generating 6,870 Million Units annually. The project includes construction of roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals to improve connectivity and socio-economic conditions in the remote districts of Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey in Arunachal Pradesh. The project is jointly built and operated by NHPC Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh through a Joint Venture Company, with an estimated construction period of 96 months (8 years). The project also includes flood moderation benefits downstream in the Brahmaputra valley, with Rs 4,743.98 crore earmarked for flood control. The total investment approved is Rs 26,069.50 crore, with contributions from the central government for flood moderation, enabling infrastructure, and financial assistance towards Arunachal Pradesh's equity share.
