The project involves reviewing and updating the detailed designs for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area in Uganda. The main objective of the project is to review and update the detailed designs for the BRT system that were prepared in 2014 to reflect current and expected travel needs in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (GKMA). The 42 km BRT scheme is set to be implemented in phases: Phase 1 will run along the Kalerwe (Bwaise) to Kibuye corridor, with a link to Banda along Jinja Road; Phase 2 will run from Banda to Mukono; Phase 3 will span the Kibuye-Kajjansi corridor; and Phase 4 will run along the Kalerwe to Kasangati (Gayaza) corridor. The proposed design includes the construction of: Exclusive BRT lanes spanning 3.5 m, each located in the center or side of the road. The lanes are expected to fit within the available space; 26 stations with side platforms (40x5m) to fit within the available space; Three terminals spanning 3 ha each; One depot spanning 4 ha; Bicycle parking facilities on stations and terminals; and Traffic signaling on all key junctions. The project also includes the provision of 18 m long articulated low-floor buses that can travel at 22 km an hour and carry up to 150 passengers.
