Description

Description

Kansai International Airport (KIX) is located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, Japan. It was designed to address overcrowding and noise issues at Itami Airport and opened in 1994. The airport was a monumental engineering feat with an original cost around $20 billion, with some estimates closer to $40 billion accounting for inflation and maintenance. The airport is sinking faster than anticipated due to subsidence of the artificial islands it is built on, constructed on alluvial clay. More than two million vertical drainage pipes were installed to improve stability, but the combined weight of earth, rock, and concrete has surpassed original projections. The airport faced flooding and temporary closure during Typhoon Jebi in 2018. Despite challenges, the sinking has slowed, and over $150 million has been invested in strengthening seawalls and studies to ensure stability.
