The project’s goal was to update the map information pertaining to the Republic of Karelia produced in different types of environmental projects and to make the map information and related availability, use and pricing information available to Finnish and Russian users. A further project goal was to create a network between users. The project was to further refi ne the existing large-scale material for the use of agencies as direction maps, in particular for the needs of the border region’s environment-oriented projects. In addition, the availability of small-scale materials was to be assessed. The information would be made available to users both in writing and electronically in an information network. The project would promote co-operation between officials and on border waters and would benefi t the EU’s water policy framework directive’s implementation as well as directive co-operation on border area waters. Fifty percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 % from Finland’s Environmental Administration under the Ministry of the Environment.
