Description

Description

The Karnataka State Highways Improvement Project for India aims to improve the core road network in Karnataka. The core road network is defined here as the state highways plus the most heavily trafficked major district roads. The project will produce the following outputs: It will enhance the capacity and quality of the core state highway network; provide safer transit on selected corridors; improve allocation and provide adequate funding for the road sector; and provide more efficient and effective network management and delivery of road infrastructure services. The project has four components: 1) upgrading and widening about 1000 km of priority state roads; 2) rehabilitating about 1300 km of state roads; 3) supporting the implementation of the Institutional Development Action Plan for the Public Works Department, pre-investment studies and other miscellaneous expenses including incremental operating costs; and 4) supporting a pilot safety program. The project finances civil works for road construction and rehabilitation; consultancies for advisory services, training, construction supervision, project management, system development and implementation; equipment and logistical syupport; as well as required social rehabilitation and resettleemnt, and environmental mitigation measures. The estimated costs for physical works include the base cost, supervision, land acquisition, social resettlement and rehabilitation, and physical and price contingencies.
