Kathgarh Lift Irrigation Project

The Kathgarh Lift Irrigation project is a major initiative aimed at expanding canal-based irrigation in Balachaur to address water scarcity in the semi-hilly belt. It is constructed on the right side of the Bist Doab Canal with a discharge capacity of 67 cusecs, designed to lift canal water to high-elevation areas previously left out due to terrain. The project reduces reliance on groundwater in a region classified as a 'Dark Zone' and is expected to boost agricultural productivity and ensure long-term water security. It will expand irrigation coverage from 28,205 acres across 72 villages to nearly 42,205 acres spanning 105 villages. The project is executed in three stages, with the first stage completed, the second stage underway, and the third stage in design phase.
