Description
Description | In the Kawango-Zambezi region (KAZA), the states of Angola, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe have been supported since 2009 in the implementation of their supra-regional Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) concept as part of financial cooperation with SADC. The aim is to promote the strengthening and further development as well as the management of the cross-border KAZA-TFCA nature park, which enables the networking of separate natural habitats and promotes tourism as an important driver of the region's economic development. This serves to preserve and restore biodiversity and improve the socio-economic conditions of the local population, on the basis of developing eco- and cultural tourism and sustainable management of natural resources (overall objective). The third phase of the FC contribution aims to further develop the KAZA TFCA by consolidating appropriate regional, national and local organizational structures, as well as strengthening participatory, integrated management of natural resources and improving the management of protected areas and wildlife corridors (Wildlife Dispersal Area; WDA) along with improving the socio-economic conditions of the local population (project objective). On the basis of the cross-border regional integrated development plan, measures are to be implemented within defined wildlife corridors with the involvement of the local population. The target group of the project is the rural population living within the TFCA, particularly within the WDAs, and the private sector that lives from natural resources and tourism. The total cost of the project in the third phase over a period of 5 years (2017-2021) is estimated at EUR 26.2 million, of which EUR 15.5 million will be covered by the FC contribution, EUR 5.0 million by the Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) contribution and EUR 5.7 million by the KAZA governments' own contributions. |
