Description | The Kaveri Engine project is an indigenous jet engine development initiative started in the 1980s by India's Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) under DRDO. It aims to reduce India's reliance on foreign engines for fighter jets by developing a low-bypass, twin-spool turbofan engine producing around 80 kN of thrust, initially intended for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. The project faced challenges such as thrust deficiencies, weight issues, delays due to sanctions, and was delinked from the Tejas programme in 2008. A derivative version is now being developed for unmanned aerial vehicles like the Ghatak stealth UCAV, with recent progress in in-flight testing and private sector involvement. |
