Description

Description

The Kawasaki Steel Corporation Strip Mill Project for Japan is the leading producer of steel plates and metal sheets. It has a well-established financial position both in the Japanese and export markets. However, its steel plates and metal sheet mills are obsolete and their costs of production are higher than those of modern continuous or semi-continuous strip mills. The company cannot complete its original development plan, which involves the addition of the rolling steel facilities needed to convert the slabs into hot and cold strip. The new mill will replace the old hand sheet mills, and have an expansion capacity to produce thin sheets from 215,000 tons to 315,000 tons by 1961. The procurement of new equipment will help complete the integrated modern facilities which Kawasaki began to construct five years ago, without it, the company's competitive position is likely to deteriorate progressively.
