The Second Kawasaki Steel Corporation Blast Furnace Project for Japan involves the construction of a second blast furnace at the Kawasaki plant in the Chiba district near Tokyo. The existing steel plate and metal sheet mills are obsolete, and their costs of production are higher than those of modern continuous or semi-continuous strip mills. The second blast furnace will have a capacity of 1,000 tons of pig iron per day, a battery of 60 coke ovens and other by-product facilities. The new project will increase pig iron production capacity from 324,000 to 684,000 tons per year. The proportion of iron ore and scrap iron in the blast furnace charge will be reduced, and the pellets increased. The project will reduce costs of production and increase the output of crude and finished steel without further investment in steel furnaces or rolling facilities.
