Kennebec River Dam Removal and Modification Project

A $300 million long-term project to remove or modify four dams downstream on the Kennebec River in Maine. The project aims to restore free-flowing conditions on the Kennebec River from tidewater to the confluence of the Sandy River and beyond, enabling endangered wild Atlantic salmon to swim freely up to the Sandy River within a decade. The project is managed by the Kennebec River Restoration Trust, led by the Nature Conservancy, which agreed to buy the dams from Brookfield Renewable Partners. The project may include dam removal and other efforts in collaboration with local communities and businesses, including a paper mill that opposes the project.
