Kentucky Small Modular Nuclear Reactors Deployment Study

Utility companies LG&E and KU are collaborating with X-energy to study the possibility of deploying small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) in Kentucky to meet long-term energy needs, especially due to rising demand from energy-intensive users like data centers. The study explores the deployment of cleaner, reliable energy using SMRs, which have a smaller, more flexible design than traditional nuclear plants and can be factory-built and assembled on-site. The initiative is supported by the Kentucky Nuclear Energy Development Authority and the Nuclear Reactor Site Readiness Pilot Program, which includes a $75 million grant for site studies, permitting, and licensing.
