Kenya - Ethiopia/Kenya Electricity Highway Project

The Ethiopia-Kenya Electricity Highway Project, approved in June 2011 by the African Development Bank, involves the construction of an electricity highway between Ethiopia and Kenya consisting of about 1,068 km of transmission line (about 437 km will be in Ethiopia and about 631 km in Kenya) and associated Alternating current/Direct current (AC/DC) converter stations at Wolayta-Sodo (Ethiopia) and Suswa (Kenya) substations with a transfer capacity of up to 2,000 megawatt (MW) in either direction. The electricity highway will contribute to the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) countries’ social and economic development and poverty reduction efforts. The project is expected to cost UA 840 million and to be commissioned in November 2017. It will be completed in less than five years.
