Kenya - Last Mile Connectivity Project

The proposed Last Mile Connectivity Project aims at maximising the use of KPLC’s 35,000 distribution transformers spread across the 47 counties in the country. The existing distribution transformers shall be exploited to the maximum through extension of the low voltage network to reach around 1.2 million people located in the vicinity of these transformers. The project entails (i) the construction of the distribution network with about 12,000 meters of low voltage distribution lines; (ii) the installation of equipment for the connection of minimum 284,200 residential and minimum 30,000 commercial customers; (iii) project supervision and management; and (iv) capacity building activities in targeted areas of expertise. The total project cost is estimated at UA 99.2 million of which the Bank will contribute UA 90 million. The Kenyan population, particularly those in rural areas and low income groups, will benefit from this project as well as small businesses. In particular, providing increased electricity access, the project will contribute to improvement in standards of living of the targeted households in terms of education, health and access to information. And for small businesses, the project will help increase the competitiveness and expansion of activities.
