Kenya has launched the largest housing project in Africa, focusing on building affordable housing units to address the issue of informal settlements. The program includes making public land available free of charge, reducing construction costs through standardization and professional cost reductions, and establishing a dedicated housing fund financed by local resources. The project aims to build 273,000 housing units in the last three years, with 8,000 keys handed over and 55,000 more to be handed over within the year, and a pipeline of 700,000 housing units. It has mobilized $5 billion from local resources, employed 640,000 young professionals, and is reversing slum growth in Nairobi by replacing slums with decent housing.
