Kenya plans to construct a 2,000MW nuclear power plant in Bondo, Siaya County near Lake Victoria. Groundbreaking is scheduled for March 1, 2027, with commissioning expected by 2034. The plant will initially have a capacity of 1,000MW to 2,000MW, with potential expansion to 20,000MW by 2040. The project is estimated to cost approximately KSh 500 billion (about $3.8 billion) and will have an operational lifespan of 60 to 80 years. It is owned and operated by Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), which was designated as owner-operator in December 2025. The project aims to expand Kenya's electricity capacity from 3,300MW to at least 10,000MW within five to seven years, with 3,000MW from nuclear energy. Construction is expected to create 5,000 to 12,000 jobs during peak phase, and electricity costs are projected at 4 to 5.5 US cents per kWh after capital recovery.
