Description

The Union government led by PM Narendra Modi has increased Kerala's railway budget from an average of Rs 372 Crore (2009-14) to Rs 3,042 Crore for the financial year 2025-26. The project includes working on the 3rd and 4th railway lines from North to South Kerala to facilitate passenger and cargo movement. Key projects discussed include the Angamaly-Erumeli railway project (Sabari rail project) and the construction of Road Over Bridges (ROB) and Road Under Bridges (RUB). The Sabari rail project, first proposed in 1997-98, is planned to be implemented in two phases with 50% of the cost borne by the Kerala state government. Land acquisition notifications have been issued for the next 70 km, although the project was previously frozen in 2019. The Kerala government has expressed readiness to bear 50% of the project cost, estimated at Rs 2,815 crore, through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
