Description

Description

The Keweenaw Military Wagon Road was a 19th-century military road constructed to facilitate movement of troops, supplies, and settlers from Green Bay, Wisconsin to Copper Harbor at the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. The road was authorized by Congress in 1863 and was to be 220 miles long, at least 40 feet wide, with a travel surface of at least 16 feet wide, including bridges and timber coverings over swamps. The project was funded by land grants to Michigan and Wisconsin. Construction was done by the U.S. Military Road Company, with the Wisconsin section completed in June 1870, the Keweenaw section in August 1871, and the entire Michigan section completed in 1873. By completion, the road had little military value but spurred economic and civil development in the region.
