Description | The Keystone Pipeline is a 2,689-mile system that carries thick Canadian tar sands oil to refineries in Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas. In December 2022, a rupture in the pipeline caused a major oil spill in Kansas, dumping nearly 13,000 barrels of heavy crude oil into a creek. The spill was the largest onshore crude pipeline spill in the U.S. in nine years. The operator, South Bow, agreed to pay $26.9 million in civil penalties and spend an estimated $40 million to prevent future accidents. The company also agreed to pay more than $3 million for environmental restoration projects in Kansas. The cleanup was completed early in 2024. The pipeline was originally built by TC Energy, which spun off South Bow as a separate firm in 2024 after the cleanup. |
