Description
Description | The West Pakistan Khairpur Ground Water and Salinity Control Project consists of the draining and desalinization of a gross area of 355,000 acres by means of tubewells and a surface drain disposal system. The project is to provide drainage to control waterlogging and salinity in the Khairpur irrigation area. The work of the project, to be constructed over 3 years, will consist of: the installation and equipment of about 568 tubewells spaced over 355,000 acres of the Khairpur area, including 250,000 acres of present cropland; the construction of seven surface drain disposal systems to convey pumped water from well sites to major watercourses; the installation of seven pumping plants to lift the water collected by these systems into the watercourses; the construction of regulators, bridges, and culverts in connection with the drains; and the extension of the main power transmission line by about 15 miles and the erection of power distribution lines from the main line to tubewell sites and the installation of transformers. The objective will be the lowering of the groundwater level to a minimum of seven feet below surface by pumping from the tubewells. The salt concentrations in surface soils will be leached to lower depths by heavy irrigation applications and removed from the area in solution in the pumped drainage water. The attainment of these objectives will result in the reclamation of abandoned land and a consequent increase in the crop area. |
