The advances in information technology — in particular in the areas of digitalisation, data analysis and further artificial intelligence (AI) — open up new opportunities for industrial production, smart products, services and information systems for trade: large amounts of information about machines, orders, customer usage habits, etc. can be recorded at low cost and in high detail, processed automatically and analysed by AI itself. Further, AI through machines (so-called machine learning) can independently develop measures as suggestions for action. This creates great opportunities for the development of innovative products, services and data-driven business models based on them. At the same time, it must not be overlooked that such a profoundly effective technology as AI, which may also be used in sensitive areas of life, should be embedded ethically, legally, culturally and institutionally in order to respect fundamental values and individual fundamental rights of society and human beings. Because this technology will fundamentally change people’s way of working. The aim of KI-AGIL is to improve the prerequisites for the development of AI and innovative business areas, especially for SMEs. As an example, the Hanzehoogschool Groningen and the Institute for Dual Studies at Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, Campus Lingen, will show opportunities for six SMEs in the border region to develop new forms of work and business models with companies that respect basic social values. 10 other establishments in the border region will be advised on the possibilities of using AI. This project will prepare a larger project on AI roll-out for SMEs in the border region.
