Description

Description

Trans Africa Railway Corporation was awarded a 20-year concession contract to construct and operate a transhipment facility in Kidatu. The contract also allowed Trans Africa to use the Tanzania's rail network, running parallel (captive) services to the state-owned railway operator. The construction of this facility allowed freight traffic to run from Johannesburg (South Africa) to Kampala (Uganda). Trans Africa was 48% owned by the South Africa Infrastructure Fund (private equity fund), 20% owned by Comazar (66% owned by South Africa Infrastructure Fund) and 32% owned by the East Africa Coast Corporation. The transhipment facility to be built at Kidatu allowed the movement of cargo from the rail line coming from Johannesburg to the rail line going to Kampala. Trans Africa expected to carry an initial 80,000 tones of cargo per year from Johannessburg to Kampala and 250,000 tonnes of Tanzania's domestic cargo per year. Construction works were underway and transportation through Kidatu is already possible. The system was expected to be fully operational by the end of 1999. None None
