Description | The Kidston pumped hydro project is a 250-megawatt pumped hydro storage facility being developed by Genex Power at an old gold mine 270 kilometres north-west of Townsville, Queensland. It is one of only two pumped hydro projects currently under construction in Australia. Initially due to be operational by 2024, the project faced considerable delays and was finally registered with the Australian Energy Market Operator in late 2025. Another six-month delay was reported, and the project is now due to be ready for commercial use in July 2027. The project is complex as it is the first pumped hydro storage project in 40 years in Australia. |
